Dear PhD Candidates,

The UM3MT competition is back!

Calling for participants who dare to take the challenge for this year UM3MT. This is the opportunity to share your fascinating and valuable research work with the campus community, and if you are the ONE, an interesting prize is yours!

Before that, please read through the important things that YOU MUST KNOW about this competition:

What is it UM3MT?

 UM 3MT (University of Malaya Three Minute Thesis) is a University of Malaya base
Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition.
 The 3MT competition is first developed by The University of Queensland, Australia, to provide a great platform for research students in exercising their communication and research skills through a three minute presentation.
 The participants should explain their theses in language that is comprehensible for a non
specialist audience.

Why do it?

 To provide communication skills training for postgraduate research students.
 To provide an outlet for postgraduate research students to talk about their work to a general

When and where is it?
 Faculty level competition:
1st April 2019 (Monday) at 10.00 am, The Cube Block A, FCSIT

Who can participate?

 Active PhD candidates who are in the 4th semester and above in a PhD program (including thesis under submission). Graduates are not eligible.

What are the rules for participants?

 The presentation must be presented in English.
 A single static PowerPoint slide is permitted. No slide transitions, animations or 'movement' of any description are allowed. The slide is to be presented from the beginning of the oration.
 No additional electronic media (e.g. sound and video files) are permitted.
 No additional props (e.g. costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment) are permitted.
 Presentations are limited to 3 minutes’ maximum and competitors exceeding 3 minutes are disqualified.
 Presentations are to be spoken word (e.g. no poems, raps or songs).
 Presentations are to commence from the stage.
 Presentations are considered to have commenced when a presenter starts their presentation through either movement or speech.
 The judging panel’s decision is final.

What are the judging criteria?

 Presentations should include:
 Why your research is important?
 What you have done to address the research question?
 What long term outcomes are you anticipating?

The judging panel will be looking for:

 Did the presentation provide an understanding of the background and significance to the research question being addressed, while explaining terminology and avoiding jargon?
 Did the presentation clearly describe the impact and key results of the research including conclusions and outcomes?
 Did the presentation follow a clear and logical sequence?
 Was the thesis topic, impact, key results and research significance and outcomes communicated in language appropriate to a non-specialist audience?
 Did the presenter spend adequate time on each element of their presentation - or did they elaborate for too long on one aspect or was the presentation rushed?

 Did the oration make the audience want to know more?
 Was the presenter careful not to trivialize or generalize their research?
 Did the presenter convey enthusiasm for their research?
 Did the presenter capture and maintain their audience's attention?
 Did the speaker have sufficient stage presence, eye contact and vocal range; maintain a steady pace, and have a confident stance?
 Did the PowerPoint slide enhance the presentation - was it clear, legible, and concise?

PTj level competition
 First place: RM 300 + certificate
 Second place: RM 200 + certificate
 Third place : RM 100 + certificate
