Before that, please read through the important things that YOU MUST KNOW about this competition:

What is it UM3MT?

 UM 3MT (University of Malaya Three Minute Thesis) is a University of Malaya base
Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition.
 The 3MT competition is first developed by The University of Queensland, Australia, to provide a great platform for research students in exercising their communication and research skills through a three minute presentation.
 The participants should explain their theses in language that is comprehensible for a non
specialist audience.

Why do it?

 To provide communication skills training for postgraduate research students.
 To provide an outlet for postgraduate research students to talk about their work to a general
audience.

When and where is it?
 Faculty level competition:
1st April 2019 (Monday) at 10.00 am, The Cube Block A, FCSIT

Who can participate?

 Active PhD candidates who are in the 4th semester and above in a PhD program (including thesis under submission). Graduates are not eligible.

What are the rules for participants?

 The presentation must be presented in English.
 A single static PowerPoint slide is permitted. No slide transitions, animations or 'movement' of any description are allowed. The slide is to be presented from the beginning of the oration.
 No additional electronic media (e.g. sound and video files) are permitted.
 No additional props (e.g. costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment) are permitted.
 Presentations are limited to 3 minutes’ maximum and competitors exceeding 3 minutes are disqualified.
 Presentations are to be spoken word (e.g. no poems, raps or songs).
 Presentations are to commence from the stage.
 Presentations are considered to have commenced when a presenter starts their presentation through either movement or speech.
 The judging panel’s decision is final.

What are the judging criteria?

 Presentations should include:
 Why your research is important?
 What you have done to address the research question?
 What long term outcomes are you anticipating?

The judging panel will be looking for:
1. COMPREHENSION & CONTENT:

 Did the presentation provide an understanding of the background and significance to the research question being addressed, while explaining terminology and avoiding jargon?
 Did the presentation clearly describe the impact and key results of the research including conclusions and outcomes?
 Did the presentation follow a clear and logical sequence?
 Was the thesis topic, impact, key results and research significance and outcomes communicated in language appropriate to a non-specialist audience?
 Did the presenter spend adequate time on each element of their presentation - or did they elaborate for too long on one aspect or was the presentation rushed?

2. ENGAGEMENT & COMMUNICATION:
 Did the oration make the audience want to know more?
 Was the presenter careful not to trivialize or generalize their research?
 Did the presenter convey enthusiasm for their research?
 Did the presenter capture and maintain their audience's attention?
 Did the speaker have sufficient stage presence, eye contact and vocal range; maintain a steady pace, and have a confident stance?
